ABOUT THE BOOK:
The Gita is an evolving response which deals with theconflicts between Veda and Vedanta and then with thechallenge posed to Vedanta by Buddhism. Its shift toBhakti is the climax of the battle between Brahmanism andBuddhism. There are probably multiple authors of the Gita asshown by stylistic changes and the frequent shift of subjectmatter. For Meghnad Desai, Gita is a secular text, a result ofhuman creation over several centuries. He also contends thatsome themes in the Gita reinforce social inequality and lackof concern for the other and to that extent he finds Gita to betoxic.
